The Backstory

Like many coffee people, part of my love affair with the bean originated with experiences in Europe. On my first trip to the EU nearly 20 years ago, I experienced what I thought was espresso nirvana - I had no idea coffee could be so dark, rich and satisfying. Subsequently, like many coffee people, I strove to imitate that flavor profile here. Hence our Classic Italian Espresso.

Since then, I've been to Europe dozens of times. Over the last few years I've noticed a disturbing trend (at least I see it as a trend). In my opinion, the quality of European coffee has declined. All the while, the craft roasting movement in the US has increased in quality. That's not to say that the average cup here is better than the average cup there - I don't think that's true. What I am saying is that the best of America now blows away the best of Europe. The student has become the master.

In that spirit, we set out to create what I think of as a distinctly non-European espresso. An AMERICAN espresso. American Pie is the result. (In case you're wondering, I had the Don McClean song in mind when we named it, not the trashy movie. I thought about renaming when I discovered the movie, but I really think that the McClean song, with all its oblique references to the artists that made American rock... Lovin' Spoonful, Bob Dylan, Pete Seger, Joan Baez, Marty Robbins... along with the obvious references to Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Richie Valens, and of course Elvis... really evoke the meaning I was looking for.)

This coffee is a blend of 100% Arabicas. It contains the whole spectrum of coffee processing - natural, washed and semi-washed. It's sweet and rich, with a full body and nice crema. You'll taste a variety of chocolates, nuts and fruit, with a pleasant lingering aftertaste that doesn't bite.
